I was not aware of this, either. I can't explain the part about certain users' 
accounts not being backed up, but it seems that the lack of backups when no one 
is logged in goes back a ways.

I found this by Googling and it presents a solution to that problem that 
involves editing a single preferences file. Perhaps it will help you:
