I had to replace a drive on this same iMac nearly 2 years ago and the repair 
shop only charged $55, which was much better than I expected.  I'd certainly be 
willing to pay that if I knew it was only a bad hard drive.

I guess I'll try the hardware diagnostic disc next.  As you say, I should be 
able to get it out eventually.
