I would try from the DVD-ROM then. If it gets stuck inside, then when you get a 
new HD installed, they can remove the disk, or when you get the iMac home, 
you'll have a bootable machine, so you can eject it then. I've had disks stuck 
in slot loading drives before, and careful timing of a USB-connected keyboard's 
eject key always got the disk out [sometimes it took several tries though!]. 

The main reason to run the diag is to make sure nothing else is wrong with the 
system. It sounds like it's just the drive, but better to be safe than sorry. 
If it is just the drive, the repair shop can have it installed for you while 
you wait [or at least the ones in the western NC area can!], and if you bring 
your own drive, it won't cost much to do [i'd say under $50 easily].
