Sounds like it does not start up, or starts up too slowly, when power is
reapplied. If it's too slow, OS X will just abort the connection on you.
What I would do is try it on a Windows machine and see if you see the same
behavior. I suspect you will. Windows 7 not only won't precipitously abort
the connection if the drive doesn't respond, it will also give you that
"be-doop" sound when it finally does, so you will even be able to gauge how
late the drive is in responding to the wakeup. Try to have the "My Computer"
window open when you sleep the machine.
