Bill,

It is enabled. Disabling this results in a dialog box being displayed whenever 
a conversation is closed warning that the contents will be lost and are not 
recoverable.

Just to be clear, I tried deleting all preferences for Messages and the problem 
is still occurring, so it seems to be a bug in the app.
