And, as it turns out, attempting to play an .avi movie requires installing some plugins. On 10.6.8, those plugins only work in quicktime 7, not in normal quicktime 10. >From what I understand, there's no way to say "Open the .avi's that QT 10 can handle in QT 10, open the ones that need windows decoders in QT 7". So, how can I say "Only open .avi's in QT7, open everything else in QT10"? You mentioned having to play with over a dozen suffix tags.
