Yes, I believe there are certain recommendations for charging levels for 
lithium ion batteries to prolong their life (but google knows more than me and 
I am unsure how much of a life extension it will give the battery ;-).

I think Apple does the very best it can (with custom software and hardware) to 
prolong the life of the batteries - they made a big thing of it a while back - 
BUT, as you mention, they aim to keep it maximum charged.

This is a great idea.  I very rarely use my laptop on battery power (especially 
now that I have iPad and iPhone).  I wish Apple would provide an option in 
"Energy Saver" to "Preserve Battery" rather than just to keep battery fully 
charged.  

This would probably involve maintaining the battery at  a level like you 
mention (50-60%) with trickle charge rather than just not using the battery and 
letting it empty completely, which I believe is not good for lithium ion 
batteries.  

Maybe in Mac OS X 10.21 Super Nova ;-)
