I am re-ripping a very large CD collection. Formerly done at 160kbps, now
re-ripping with Apple Lossless. Around half the time, if the album title and
artist of the CD match an album already found in my collection, iTunes will
offer to “Replace Tracks,” preserving the play count and artwork, which is what
I want.

But the other half the time, it wants to rip new copies, and does not offer to
replace the existing ones. I’ll go back and forth, making sure the year, genre,
composer, comments etc. all match precisely (via copy/paste —> batch edit). But
most of the time, I just can’t make iTunes recognize that the CD is identical
to what’s already on disc.

I can’t for the life of me figure out what criteria iTunes is using to decide
when an album is identical. Anyone know?

Thanks,
./s
