It is not a problem with homebrew

It is not a problem strictly with /usr, or /usr/local

I get the same results on every directory that falls into this category (not owned by me, but 775 permissions with a group I am a member of)

There are no ACLs involved on any of the directories I've tried testing this with

I realize that this is an unusual situation, and that I *should* be able to write to the directories involved. But I can't, which is why I'm asking for help. :)

I'm curious at this point if there are any other mailing lists or forums that y'all would recommend that I could post this question to. Of course I remain open to help from this list, but it seems we're going in circles a bit.
