I don’t believe it is possible to do that. The purpose of signing an 
application is s that it can 1) be verified with Apple and 2) the cert can be 
pulled if there’s anything hinky. Neither of these purposes are served with a 
self-signed cert.

I believe this was changed back in 10.8?

The documentation on signing is here, and doe snot mention self-signing.
