I’m hoping someone has some suggestions.

A friend of mine, a professor at a major university, unfortunately is relegated
to using a Dell laptop with 3 GB of RAM running Windows 7 Enterprise 2009
Service Pack 1. 32-bit.

Due to storage constraints, he has been running his iTunes library off an
external LaCie D2 Quadra V3C (1.16 TB free out of 1.8.1 TB). His control panel
says there is 0% fragmentation.

Most of the files he ripped from his CDs are in Apple Lossless format. Some of
the videos in his library are from YouTube (H.264?).

Playback of both music and video will often pause for 30 - 90 seconds, then
resume from where it was paused. It can happen several times in one file. It
is random, but happens enough that it’s impossible to listen to music or watch
a video. He is running the latest version of iTunes (12.1) which he installed
last Friday, but the problem existed prior to the update.

He did some searching online and found posts from 2010-2013 talking bout this
very playback issue happening on both Windows and Mac - and it seems related to
running the library off an external drive. However, I haven’t been able to
find any recents posts concerning this problem.

I run my music and photo libraries on external drives on 3 machines and am not
having this problem running Yosemite.

I realize there could be many factors causing the pauses in his case.

I asked him to try a different media player using content from the external
drive.

I know this is a talk list for Mac OS X! But I’m hoping there are some
cross-platform experts here who may have run into this problem or have
suggestions.

Thanks,
Kevin
