After testing with other players and testing the USB ports and cables, it 
appears to be entirely unrelated to iTunes and likely his hard drive starting 
to fail. So this experience will not dissuade him from upgrading to a Mac (and 
continuing to use iTunes) when the university allows, which is his plan. 

But that's a good question; I'll ask about encryption.
