My money is on number 2, though I've seen both of these problems.
Even though the Airport is supposed to choose intelligently based on
surrounding wireless traffic when set to an "Automatic" channel, sometimes
you're better off making the choice manually. A Wi-Fi scanner may yield some
clues about which channels are the most crowded.
OS X includes such a scanner. On Mavericks, search for Wireless Diagnostics,
then after you launch the program, ignore the Wireless Diagnostics wizard that
appears and instead click on the Window menu and choose Utilities. On Yosemite,
hold the Option key, click the wireless menu extra, choose "Open Wireless
Diagnostics," then click on the Window menu and choose Scan.
There are a lot of appliances that interfere with wireless that won't show up
on any scanner, but this is a good place to start. Let us know how it goes.
