Try creating a new user and running stuff there as a test.  If it feels zippy, 
then you've loaded your usual user ID down with too much bloat.

Another thing I do is boot from a virgin copy of the OS on an external drive (I 
have these laying around, as I do housecall service).  Modulo the speed of the 
external interface, that gives you an idea of what an unbloated system runs 
like on your hardware.
