Without hacking the menu bar or adding software you could simply set each desktop background for each space. Use an image editor to add the number for each desktop to the image. Or, if you have a trackpad swipe up with 4 fingers which shows which desktop you are on. Or, if you don’t have a trackpad, put Mission Control in your dock and click it.
