If you’re not afraid of the command line (Terminal), you can use sips for that 
sort of things (disclaimer: never used it).

% sips --help
sips 10.4.4 - scriptable image processing system.
This tool is used to query or modify raster image files and ColorSync ICC 
profiles.
Its functionality can also be used through the “Image Events" AppleScript suite.

You can also install imagemagick (http://imagemagick.org/script/index.php) for 
almost everything you’d like.

And yes, I’m not so wild about Apple’s document system, either. Don’t mind the 
auto-save, but I find the UI a bit odd. But that’s probably my 20 years of 
“doing it the old way” that’s acting up.
