Okay, so it looks like I'm in the market for a new external USB drive, > 3 TB. - I've heard the above quote is true, that if you take an overheating external Seagate drive out of its unvented plastic case, the warranty is void. - And I've heard that Western Digital uses some sort of always-on hardware encryption chip hidden in their external drive case electronics such that if the enclosure goes bad, you can't simply move the drive to another case or use it as an internal drive. You're hosed. Any recommendations? I'm leaning toward getting an internal Seagate drive and putting it into an external USB case of my choosing (w/fan).
