How bizarre.  I got different, but related symptoms, running the same release.

I dragged the URL to the Desktop.  When I clicked on the URL to drag it to a 
folder, Finder crashed, bam, right off the bat.  This happened twice.  The 
third time, it let me drag it to a folder.  I opened up that folder, and had no 
problems launching the URL from there, with Safari either active or quit.
