I was thinking about starting up a low-cost cooperative perl
webhosting organization.

I do love my Mac OS X for its beauty and Unix core, but for creating
a bunch of cheap boxes to throw Emacs, Apache and Perl and Postgresql
on, what is the point?

Wouldn't it be more cost effective and equally rapid in execution to
use PC-based Linux or BSD solutions?

Hope I haven't offended anyone by asking this?
