This is the start of time under Unix (aka Unix epoch) the system
clock basically counts the seconds from 01/01/1970 to calculate the
current day, date and time.

Under the old MacOS time started at 01/01/1904 (aka Mac epoch), a
date frequently seen by powerbook users who didn't manage to connect
their box up to the mains after getting the "You have 10 seconds to
comply" warning on the failing battery power supply.

So basically the crash wiped out your system prefs relative to date
and time and the default date and time for Unix systems is the Unix
epoch.
