symptom of a bigger problem. all CPAN does is download and compile the 
same source that i was using, with fewer configuration options. i'd like 
to be able to freely configure mod_perl for use with my website.

however.

i force-installed Bundle::Apache, and httpd refuses to load. i'm not 
getting any error messages (?) in my system log, but i've configured my 
httpd.conf to load the module at /usr/libexec. as soon as i comment the 
appropriate lines out again, it loads freely, even though CPAN (and a 
quick look confirms) that it was installed without issue.

damn. any suggestions?
