effectively this gags the locale warnings, forcing perl to fall back
on the standard locale ('C') at compile time, and doesn't really
appear to solve the problem - which would seem to be an incorrectly
configured locale.
Why does this happen and why didn't this happen with the other two
macs running the same version of the OS which used the self same
proceedure to upgrade to 5.6.1?
What did I miss?
