I tried that.  Didn't work.

   open($rf, ">filename/rsrc") or die $!;

Oh, I see.  I need to first create the file, THEN I can open the rsrc fork.  
D'oh.

   open($df, ">filename") or die $!;
   open($rf, ">filename/rsrc") or die $!;

There we go.  Much better than using ResMerger.  Thanks,
