Questions about installing the Perl DBI

I'm sure this has been hashed and rehashed here, but I'm having trouble geetting DBI installed in X. Can anybody direct me towards a HOWTO? I downloaded the module and tried to do a 'make test' and it failed. Let me know if more information is needed.
