I don't get this advice -- I've never had a problem in just doing the plain old upgrade installs.


It can't hurt (much) to wipe everything out, I guess, but it seems so close to the painful "Windows needs to be reformatted every 3 months" chestnut -- there may be an element of truth in there, but if the system has been maintained well, that's really overkill.
