It seems that you were right. I didn't know of this sort of shenanigans. This morning 
I ran again the suspicious Perl installer I had kept aside. Being placed on the 
desktop, it would no longer install Anarchie but "QDesign MVP". After copying it into 
a folder, it installed Perl.

Apparently the machinery that stands behind double-clicking was activating some other 
file with creator "VIS3".

SOS disk 7.2.2 and Norton Disk Doctor 4.0.2 did not find anything wrong, but TechTool 
Pro 2 did. It fixed a number of file dates, bundle and custom icon bits.
Thereafter, the Mac_Perl_520r4_appl on the desktop installed Perl normally.

Thanks Christian for pointing to the right direction. Clearly, CPAN and MacPerl were 
not involved in this problem. Next time, I'll know better.
