A leading . on a file name was *once* special on Mac: it meant (except
when misused) "I am a driver". [The system had a tendency to try to
execute such files as drivers.] Norton Utilities still remembers that (at
least until very recent versions), and wants to deal with non-drivers whose
names have a leading . by changing their names. This causes "a certain
amount of difficulty" if Norton does it to a Mac OS X HFS+ volume.

Also, just a note about the Icon<return> files: aside from containing the
folder's custom icon, they were co-opted by Apple to contain the stuff
relating to folder actions attached to a folder.
