What version of MacPerl do you have? It sounds like you don't have MacPerl 5.6.1r1, which is the latest version, and comes with Compress::Zlib. If you must remain with 5.2.0r4 or somesuch, then there is the cpan-mac distribution, which comes with all you need to use CPAN.pm on that version. All of that stuff is included with 5.6.1r1, though.
