What version of MacPerl do you have?  It sounds like you don't have MacPerl
5.6.1r1, which is the latest version, and comes with Compress::Zlib.  If
you must remain with 5.2.0r4 or somesuch, then there is the cpan-mac
distribution, which comes with all you need to use CPAN.pm on that version.
All of that stuff is included with 5.6.1r1, though.

As far as configuring CPAN in the "shell", you might have to hit ctrl-D
instead of return for picking from lists.
