Seeing as how the only place that's going to be setting depends_foo prior to
a Portfile would be a port group, that makes sense.  Considering their
functionality, would a Portfile ever need to override a group's
dependencies?


I've done it before (for a portfile I don't think I ever submitted, though).

I find the current syntax clear, and would rather just see the documentation and examples updated to recommend using the -append versions.
