And selfupdate also does sync unless you use --nosync.

Some people also can't do selfupdate because they are behind a rigid
firewall which does not allows rsync access to MacOSforge servers. There
are alternatives to sync the ports tree over HTTP, but none for the
MacPorts source itself.
