When a project has an ambiguous license statement like this, we can't just take a guess at what they meant. Maybe they meant you may choose any version of the GPL, which is what you used. But it's equally possible that they meant GPLv2 only. If they included a copy of the GPL with the program, you could at least infer that that version is allowed. But they haven't in this case. So the license must remain unknown until/unless clarification is found.
