if I use the port infrastructure to do it, it chokes:

What gives?
Sounds like a gd problem, not a freetype problem. I just upgraded gd2
to 2.0.35 yesterday. Perhaps php 5.2.3 is not compatible with it...
Hmm... Let me try some things and get back to you.
