If you're talking about interactive mode, readline support is not enabled when selfupdating to a new version, see <http://trac.macports.org/ticket/19035> and <http://trac.macports.org/ticket/10651>. You can get it back by installing from the dmg, or by building from source manually and passing --enable-readline to configure.
