mysql installed fine through MacPorts, runs fine. I don't
understand what this error message is telling me,

I don't see where you mention which perl you have.
bash-3.2# port installed perl*
The following ports are currently installed:
perl5 @5.8.9_0 (active)
perl5.8 @5.8.9_3 (active)
bash-3.2# port installed mysql5*
The following ports are currently installed:

mysql5 @5.1.41_0 (active)
