Many thanks Ryan and all concerned, all working fine now. Still have
all those single text files in HD/Users/Home user folder/shall I just
leave them or put them into one single folder and call it something ?

Open the terminal. Type gimp at the prompt.
Or install gimpapp to get an icon to double click.
He installed the "gimp" port which depends on the "gimp-app" port so
he already has the icon he can double-click. It would be located in /
Applications/MacPorts.
