that seems to have done the job ..
I removed the
--with-xgrid
line from the openmpi portfile and added the line
configure.compiler gcc-4.2
compiled fine.

I am using a 2011 MBP with SnowLeopard (10.6.8) and the latest XCode for Snow
Leopard (4.0 I believe).
Possibly the same llvm-gcc-4.2 issue Lion users see:
