How exactly does that you are referring to relate to macports? The particular problem in the thread that you are referring to was present in TeX Live's repository for exactly 24 hours and should long be gone. (Almost the same problem happened a few days ago, but that one won't even proliferate into macports.) However, as Dan said, I can easily imagine that the sequence of partial updates from 2010 to 2011 packages (when some packages remain from 2010 and some upgrade to 2011) will break format generation and in optimal scenario macports should not generate formats until the last texlive 2011 package is installed and the last texlive 2010 package is removed. If that is not the case you can easily get broken formats inbetween. Is there any easy way to convince macports to wait for the last texlive package to be installed before generating formats? I wonder how Debian implements that step (I can try to ask Norbert Preining).
