MacPorts base works on Tiger and newer. MacPorts 1.8.0 and up do not compile on 
Panther anymore, and this was not thought to be a big problem, since Panther 
was already 6 years old at the time.

Officially, we support the current Mac OS X release and the preceding 
one—currently Lion and Snow Leopard. That means support for Leopard and earlier 
are waning. If we can keep things working on those older operating systems 
that's great, but fewer and fewer maintainers and developers have machines 
running those older operating systems anymore, so things are bound to start 
breaking.
