Thanks for the response. Turns out that libiconv was already installed. "port installed" reported " libiconv @1.14_0 (active)" and "sudo port install libiconv" reported: ---> Cleaning libiconv ---> Scanning binaries for linking errors: 100.0% ---> No broken files found.
