Is there really no hope of ever getting away from needing such an old version?

I've just been through the 3rd or 4th round of re-bootstrapping my libc++ on 10.6.8 world, which is distinctly neither fast not fun, especially since I'm pretty sure it would benefit from ccache, which the big beasts of that bootstrap dance ignore.
