I'm having the same problem on my new MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo.... I've scoured the web for days on end and can not get synaptics to recognize the touchpad. Gives the same error that Karl is getting. I'm using synaptics-0.14.6....
I've tried the wiki's at Gentoo, Debian and Ubuntu. onmac and mactel sites and various others. No dice with anything. /proc/bus/input/devices just gives:

As you can see, I'm using my USB mouse. mouse1 should be the touchpad device for xorg.conf but X craps out stating:
(EE) Synaptics Touchpad no synaptics touchpad detected and no repeater device
(EE) Synaptics Touchpad Unable to query/initialize Synaptics hardware.
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Synaptics Touchpad"
This is on Slackware Linux 11.0 running 2.6.18.2 Xorg-6.9.0.... Thanks for any and all help given. I'm pulling my hair out.
