hi,
i use a mac mini with audio in. no problem. it took me a while to find 
out that if you use commandline alsamixer, press tab to reach the line 
in settings, and fiddle around with the arrow tabs, there is one 
possibility that acitvates the audio in.
i can't say exactly which one it was you need to try...
the problem i have is that one output channel likes to start crackling 
and then die completely after an instense pd~ session.
under os x core audio this doesn't happen but that is a hwole other story.
