To be clear, I'm talking about the desktop Mac Pro, with the Xeon processors, not the laptop MacBook Pro, with the Core Duos.
At some point the boot pauses for a long time while searching for the CD drive. Then there are a bunch of error messages followed by a kernel panic. This seems to be a common problem as I found a long message board thread about it. Someone posted the solution, which worked for me. At the boot prompt, enter: nosplash irqpoll acpi=off With that, the LiveCD booted just fine. However, I'm concerned that disabling acpi might cause the machine to overheat, as I believe that's how power management is done in modern hardware.
