Hi list!

Encouraged by the various encouraging reports from around the net I
recently ordered and today received a White MacBook C2D 2.0Ghz (base
model). Tried Ubuntu 7.04 live CD on it, with the following success:

- correct video mode works out-of-the-box, WITHOUT 915resolution
- sound works out-of-the-box, except that the lowest volume / mute
setting is still very much audible and the headphone output crackles.
- CPU frequency scaling works
- the volume and CD-eject hotkeys work, brightness does not
(reportedly trivial to fix)
- the trackpad is close to unusable (it's very slow and has
sensitivity mood swings, sometimes it takes three tries to move the
cursor

For the stock feisty kernel which probably doesn't have the newest
mactel drivers, this is a great result, however:

- it gets uncomfortably (literally) hot (known problem but I was still shocked)
- it is loud.
   - with the live-CD inserted there is an audible hum even when the
drive is "spun down", a
     jet-engine sound otherwise.
   - without the CD (I just ripped it out when my low-workload
programs, i. e. OO Writer and
Firefox were loaded) there is a higher-pitched hum that's almost
bearable as long as
there's next to no load. Apparenty youtube is a terrible hog, the
fan was soon louder than the
     audio :-(

That's with wireless disabled because I havn't gotten around to
madwifi. Definitely not classroom / library material.

Now to the core question: how's your battery life? I just got close to
2 hours(!) web surfing only. I'd expected a bare minimum of 4h with
wireless on for anything less than compiling or watching DVDs ...

It was to be a replacement for my iBook G4 which (admittedly running
OS X) had up to 6h of silent and cool operating time in it's heyday.

To be frank I'm this close to sending it back.

C.
