As far as I can tell, you need to use fglrx with the C2D MBP since the
free radeon driver does not support the Radeon Mobility X1600 card.

I would love to stop using fglrx, since it makes s2ram pretty annoying
(I have to stop X before suspending). If you have any luck with another
video driver for a C2D machine, please let me know.
