The vmware idea is interesting. You'd probably have to keep your VM
running the whole time to keep it underclocked, otherwise you'll probably
hit the same snag with loosing your settings once you shut down your virtual
machine.


i finally got a winXP CD and found the time to install it in vmware.
unfortunately, vmware provides its "guest" OSs with a virtual video card
rather than direct access to the real/physical video card. when i tried to
install the ATI Catalyst software, it was unable to find an appropriate
video card, and exited. so underclocking our X1600s in winX-in-vmware isn't
an option.
