Hi Jon, Sorry to put you through this trouble but, as Sven is pointing out, the problem isn't that we're trying to mess around with the GPU clock speed for performance reasons or anything. We just want powerplay to work on our C2D MBPs because they seem to burn much more power than C1D MBPs and one of the main differences seems to be lack of powerplay support. I noticed your power consumption of 33-34 watts. I found it hard to get Linux to go much below 27 watts even when I turn off everything I can. On a C1D MBP on the other hand people report going as low as 18-20 watts and in OS X you can get something more like 15 watts. This problem is so annoying that I'm not really using Linux much on my machine (because I don't want the fans running at 4k all the time). I would even be happy just manually underclocking my GPU in windows which is why I asked about the reboot thing.
I got on the forums on phoronix (www.phoronix.com) and asked Michael Larabel, who seems to have some access to the AMD developers, if he could get them to look into it. He got back to me and said that the problem was a bios problem on our machines and so AMD could do nothing about it. If you could show that things work perfectly well in Windows on the same machine then, as Sven said, the issue would then clearly reside in the Linux drivers rather than the MBP C2D bios. If this is so I'll go back to Michael and try to get him to point this out to them: http://www.phoronix.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3130&page=2 many thanks, Sheer p.s. I've also sent an email to the develper of the Omega drivers to see if he can offer any suggstions. Do you know how come he/she was able to develop a (better) ATI driver while Linux coders have to struggle to reverse engineer it -- does he/she have an NDA?
