hi guys. Intel's PowerTOP utility suggested this:

Disable 'hal' from polling your cdrom with: hal-stop-polling /dev/scd0
'hal' is the component that auto-opens a file browser when you plug in
a CD but disables SATA power saving from kicking in.

so i googled around to figure out how to do this, as the command
"hal-stop-polling" doesn't exist in Debian Etch. i came across this
page, which describes how to achieve what PowerTOP suggests (under the
"cd-rom" heading):
    http://wiki.teuwen.org/LaptopHp

so i made the changes to this file:
    /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi
and restarted dbus:
    /etc/init.d/dbus restart

however, the storage.media_check_enabled property for my cd-rom is
still set to true. does anyone have any suggestions for how to fix
this?

i've attached my "20-storage-methods.fdi" file if that's any help. cheers,
Nick

I ran that command awhile back. The one powertop suggests. It wrote the
attached file to:

/etc/hal/fdi/information/media-check-disable-storage_model_DVDRW_GWA4080MA.fdi

See attached file for contents. It's just a generic xml file. I'm assuming
you can just modify my drive name with yours and then place it in the
appropriate place and then restart hal.
