Hi,

my understanding was that the driver still needs access to the VESA
BIOS. You just don't need to use 915resolution for higher resolutions
anymore. There are a lot of messages like these in the xorg log even
with the intel driver version 1.3.0, which ist the most recent relese
AFAIK:

(II) intel(0): VESA BIOS detected
(II) intel(0): VESA VBE Version 3.0
(II) intel(0): VESA VBE Total Mem: 16064 kB
