You can find all the zoom stuff in the Universal Access control panel in System Preferences. In general you use command+option+8 to turn the ability to zoom on and off and then use command option equals to zoom in and command option minus to zoom out. There are some options, one of which is to follow keyboard focus, which you might want to turn on. There is also an option to use the control modifier so control and mouse wheel will zoom in and out or doing control and two finger drag up and down on a laptop touch pad does the same thing.
